How You Should Really Be Using Social Media for Your Business

If you’ve been following business coaches or anyone offering entrepreneurial advice online over the past ten years, you’ve probably been told—in no uncertain terms—that you need social media for your business. And yet, for many of us, social media just isn’t fun and we’re not seeing direct business results from it. So is it true? And if you need social media, how do you actually use it to see results?

The World of Social Media is Constantly Changing—But Some Things Never Change

Whether you’re talking about Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or whatever platforms come out in the future, we’re going to dive into what social media is for, what it can do for your business, and what you should be posting.

Things change very quickly on social media, so it’s hard to look at common advice from even just a year ago and apply it today. But let’s look at a kind of marketing that’s been around forever: TV commercials. Now, remember the last commercial you watched? They weren’t telling you to buy now. They were just trying to make you aware of the brand or product and paint a positive picture of what your life would look like with it. You still have to go to the store and find the product and put it in your cart and buy it, but you aren’t likely to do any of that if you’ve never heard of the brand before. That’s called brand recognition, and it’s what you need to be doing on social media today.

In order to build brand awareness on social media, you need to:

  • prove that you exist by putting things out there,

  • share what your customer needs to hear to know, like, and trust you, and

  • offer a “window shopping” experience to show your customers that you meet their needs, wants, and desires.

It’s important that you get started with this process early because it takes time to build relationships. You aren’t going to see direct sales like so many people expect, but if you start establishing brand recognition and building trust now, come the holiday season, people will feel more comfortable buying from you.
